FEATURING WORKS BY: AURORA PELLIZZI / WILLIAM RAHILLY / CELIA ROWLSON-HALL

“Revelation …that which must shortly come to pass.”

The artists in this exhibition provide a valuable viewpoint to the themes of tension between the past and future. Treatments of cultural memory suggest a foreign space, re-framing  the relation between content and consciousness inevitably influenced by the scientific, technological, and social awareness of a dissatisfied present.

Aurora Pellizzi and her Greenscreen series is a set of monochromatic, volumetric and freestanding paintings and projections that use surface texture, light and darkness to create images. The title refers to the evenly lit green backdrop used in video, where the backdrop is digitally removed and replaced by another layer of image (cut-out). The slime-green hue is tropical and Martian, natural and digital. These landscapes are the dis-embodied space of abstraction. They are relics of time and technology past and future; they are synthetic distillations of visual, somatic, and virtual experience. For the occasion of this show, Pellizzi will also be showcasing her new work Something To Look At.

William Rahilly´s photo series, Astral Gazebo, present a series of photos which play with ideas of uselessness through the use of outmoded and discarded objects, giving way to a deep analysis of displacements and aftershocks. The saturated imagery, which is not digitally manipulated, is infused with a playful awkwardness that relies upon the interrelationships the viewer automatically forms between the objects. Alternatively, his video work, Viand, is a palindromic meditation on ideas of isolation, ceremony and sustenance. Using unique costume and makeup, this colorful, hallucinatory video follows a lone figure in an empty environment who conspires to summon a deity for protection, only to consume her.

The films presented by Celia Rowlson-Hall are portraits exploring various characters through contemplative screen tests: a beached mermaid, a cowgirl surrounded by the city, a beauty queen crawling away on her hands and knees. The characters, portrayed by Mary Jane Ward, perform a sequence of movements as a display of defining actions. The five screen tests in this exhibition range from introspective and personal moments, to characters that seem to be observed from a different standpoint, going past her own personal comfort zone and evidencing Celia and Mary Jane´s common interest in new approaches to portraiture.

Aurora Pellizzi was born in Mexico City and raised between Cuernavaca’s tropical canyons and the island of Manhattan in New York. She graduated from Cooper Union in 2010 with a thesis exhibition titled Rayo Verde where she combined her interest in traditional craft with technology and image. In January 2011, she had a solo show, Colombian Expedition: Part I, at Eyelevel BQE. Pellizzi currently lives and works in New Haven, Connecticut.

William Rahilly is inspired by Japanese surrealism, net art, and skin disease, his work ranges from two-dimensional and live collaged images to video to interactive performance. Coming from a background of music and computer science he combines these elements into colorful and frenetic imagery that deal with elements of the body, ceremony and isolation.  He creates his work and organizes collaborative collage projects at his Bushwick, Brooklyn studio/performance space.

Celia Rowlson-Hall is a filmmaker, choreographer and Bessie award winning performer.  Her films have been screened at galleries such as Eyelevel BQE and festivals such as SWSX and rooftop films.  She has choreographed music videos for mgmt, Chromeo, Sebastian (dir. By Gaspar Noe), Sleigh Bells, Sondre Lerche, Erika Spring, and others.  She danced with The Faye Driscoll group and Monica Bill Barnes and co., performing at ps1, new museum, Joyce Theater, Jacobs Pillow and more.

Curação Calymayor is one of Eyelevel BQE´s most frequent collaborators. Using different pseudonyms, Calymayor has curated and produced a number of exhibitions in Mexico and New York. Her curatorial projects evidence a special interest in documenting the creative process. Her approach is particularly invested in exploring methods of installation and display that generate multiple materials and information for viewers to collect. Curação is based in Brookly, NY, and has been been organizing and curating exhibitions as well as producing her own artwork using sculpture, printmaking and photography, for over four years.

Featuring the projects of 23 curators, the show will abandon the traditional focus on galleries – offering a “break” from the typical art fair model – and showcase a range of New York City’s curatorial voices, all surrounding a single exhibition theme - Apocalist: the end of the world. SPRING/BREAK Art Show is organized by The They Co.
